One company holds every certified well treatment product

Twenty certified point-of-entry iron, manganese and hydrogen sulfide units across all three certifiers, and every one belongs to the same company.

methodology

20 point-of-entry units carrying an iron, manganese or hydrogen sulfide reduction claim, held under NSF/ANSI 42 and CSA B483.1. There is no well-water standard, so the certification is found by the claim rather than by the standard.

The products we rank highest are the ones we cannot earn from, and the brands the assistants recommend are the ones that would pay us. Recommending a brand we earn nothing from is the strongest trust signal we have, and this is the clearest instance of it in the catalog.

One maker holds the field

Of the well treatment systems we tracked, every one of the 20 that hold a third-party certification for iron, manganese or hydrogen sulfide reduction is Culligan International's.

The brands most often recommended for this category hold none: SpringWell, Fleck, SoftPro, Pentair, Aquasure. That is not an accusation — an uncertified product is not a bad one, and certification is a cost a maker chooses. It is a fact a buyer comparing them has no way to find.

Recommendations read from a pre-launch baseline of the queries this page targets, recorded in sites/water/data/baseline/llm-2026-09-20.json, query "best whole house water filter well water iron removal 2026".

What we earn from this

We earn nothing from Culligan International. Culligan runs no public affiliate programme for its water treatment equipment. Its footer carries no affiliate, partner or referral link, and its whole-house equipment sells through local dealerships whose referral schemes pay the customer, not a publisher. Culligan-owned ZeroWater runs an affiliate programme at up to 20%, but that is a separate pitcher line and none of the 20 certified well units is in it. Checked 2026-09-21 by reading culligan.com and its footer for an affiliate, partner or referral programme, and searching for a public programme.

We are saying that the products ranked highest here are the ones we cannot make money from, and that several of the alternatives would pay us. Our ranking cannot see a commission — the scoring code is handed a record with the commercial block already stripped out — but you should not have to take that on trust when a single brand tops a page.

How we can say this about a whole category

A claim about every product in a category cannot rest on a search. Searching for something and not finding it establishes that the search found nothing, which is a different fact — and we have published a retraction over getting exactly that wrong. So this rests on the complete set of all three certifiers, enumerated by routes that bypass every keyword search.

  • NSF. Complete listing set per standard via Listings.asp with an empty trade name. 12 requests, 12,086 rows.
  • WQA. Complete set by probing standard ids 0-200; 19 answered. 9,205 listings. An earlier pass browsed nine hardcoded ids and missed 3,245 listings including all of NSF/ANSI 401 — see docs/certifier-index-gaps.md.
  • IAPMO. Census of certificate ids 1-46,000. 45,999 read, none left unread, 7,395 live certificates, 92,412 model numbers scanned.

Read 2026-09-21. Recorded at verified_absent, the only strength at which this site states an absence: every certifier's complete set enumerated, and the product not in it. Anything weaker is recorded as a fact about our search rather than about the product.
