FilterSpecs

FilterSpecs is a public dataset of residential water filtration products, checked against the certifiers' own databases rather than against manufacturer marketing. Every figure carries the source it came from and the date it was verified, and a figure we cannot verify is left empty rather than estimated.

methodology

FilterSpecs holds 31 product records, of which 5 have a published page. A record is published only once its certifications have been verified against the certifier's own database and it has a product image from a source we can name. The other 26 are held back rather than filled in.

How a figure gets onto a page

Every factual value on this site carries the source it came from and the date it was checked. A specification we cannot verify from a primary source is left empty and marked unverified; it is never estimated, inferred from a similar model, or carried across from a retailer's description.

Certifications are the point of the exercise. A certification is a listing in NSF's, WQA's or IAPMO's own database naming the model and the standard. A claim is a sentence on the packaging. Product pages show both, separately, and never let one stand in for the other.

We do not test products. We do not accept free samples, payment for inclusion, or manufacturer review of a page before it is published. The full commercial position is on how we make money; the short version is that we currently earn nothing from any link on this site.

What is in it

Under-sink reverse osmosis

Systems plumbed under a kitchen sink that push water through a reverse osmosis membrane. Certified reduction claims, replacement cartridge cost over five years, and the cabinet clearance each one needs.

5 published records

Contaminants

23 pages, one per contaminant that at least one published system is certified to reduce. Each lists the certified systems, the standard the certification was issued under, and what the certification does and does not cover. A contaminant with no certified system on file has no page, because a page with nothing on it states nothing.

Findings

Claims about an entire subcategory rather than about one product. Each states the evidence that licenses its scope, because a claim about a whole category is only as good as the completeness of the search behind it.
